Political Tech Startup, The Tuesday Company is hiring summer interns

The Tuesday Company would love to invite Duke students to apply for their open summer internships. Attached are brief internship descriptions of their open positions. These are unpaid internships, so we are hoping that students are able to get university credit or scholarships.

The Tuesday Company is a progressive, political tech startup. Our app, Team, gives advocacy groups, campaigns, and unions the infrastructure to engage, scale, and activate powerful digital communities. With Team, we can reach as many people as possible and share important information, bring more voices into the discussion, and empower our friends to take action.

Our work is rooted in the conviction that supporting progressive movements will build the future that we believe in. By lowering the barriers to civic engagement, especially for millennials, low-income folks, and communities of color, we are making that future a reality.

This summer, we’re looking for smart and motivated interns to join our NYC and DC team. See tuesdaycompany.com/jobs for more info!

Social impact startup CivicRise seeks Partnerships intern

CivicRise is an early-stage technology startup (founded by Tim Scales, Fuqua '17) that seeks to mobilize effective, sustained, and measurable civic engagement. The CivicRise action app allows users to subscribe to organizations such as the ACLU or Planned Parenthood and receive targeted action alerts that they can complete through the app. The Partnerships internship is focused on seeking and developing relationships with issue-advocacy organizations who would use the app to mobilize their supporters. This would include researching prospects, creating outreach materials, assisting with pitches and demos, and other marketing/bizdev activities that we come up with together. We are looking for an enthusiastic, entrepreneurial person who is excited about the unpredictability of a startup and eager to jump in and make a difference. A passion for social entrepreneurship and/or civic engagement is a huge plus. Impeccable communication skills, professionalism, and follow-through are a must. A willingness to do the unglamorous work as well as the fun stuff is required, because that's what we're all doing here. If this looks like a good fit, email Tim at tim@civicrise.io with a resume and a quick note saying one thing you could bring to this role plus one thing you'd hope to gain from this experience.

The Transatlantic Digital Debates- Call for applications

The Transatlantic Digital Debates (TDD) program is a joint initiative of the Global Public Policy Institute (GPPi) (GPPi) and New America that brings together young professionals from Germany and the United States to work on the key challenges that sit at the intersection of technology and policy. For the second round of the program, we seek 18 participants from civil society, academia, politics, and business who are willing to engage with and challenge each other’s ideas concerning the future of the digital economy and cybersecurity in Europe and the US. The fellows will have the opportunity to debate and discuss their ideas with leading experts and practitioners from different sectors. At the end of the program, they will emerge with a broader understanding of the pressing issues defining transatlantic relations in the coming years and with new ideas on how to tackle the respective challenges. We hope that our fellows, together with the TDD alumni, will form a strong network of future decision-makers in the US and Germany. Over the course of 2017, the fellows will meet for two weeklong dialogue sessions in Germany and in the US. Discussions will take place around two main issue areas: innovation and regulation in the digital economy, as well as key challenges of cybersecurity, privacy and the transformation of the public sphere. The two dialogue sessions will take place in Berlin and Hamburg (May 28-June 3, 2017) and in Washington, DC and Austin (November 4-11, 2017). In between the sessions, the TDD fellows will disseminate the results of their work through blog posts, op-eds, podcasts, high-profile discussions, and policy breakfasts.

The application deadline is March 19, 2017, 23:59 Central European Time (CET).

•    Demonstrate a strong interest in internet and technology policy and in addressing emerging global challenges.

•    Your curriculum vitae (including date of birth, nationality, professional experience, academic background, language skills, and extracurricular activities).

•    A letter of motivation explaining why you want to join the Transatlantic Digital Debates. Please refer to instances in which you have demonstrated interest and/or professional experience in the program’s topics, and how your participation in the program would further your professional and personal development.

Please send your application to tdd@gppi.net by March 19, 2017, 23:59 Central European Time (CET). Interested applicants (and their employers) are welcome to contact the program team with questions at the email address above.

Designed for undergraduate and graduate students and builds on students’ individual learning goals by finding projects and programs that caters to each student’s interests, all the while providing an academic support structure to ensure they get the most out of their experience. The goal of the Summer 2017 program is to give students the freedom to pursue a creative independent project or internship (70 percent of their time), while providing a framework for academic and personal growth (30 percent of the time will be spent on structured seminars to more deeply understand context specific, adaptive challenges and opportunities.) The cost to the student (excluding airfare) would be $2000 for the 9-10 weeks from early June to mid-August. That covers an internship placement and all associated local travel costs, orientation, living arrangements including housing, food, and laundry, and an academic framework including short weekly readings and a weekly seminar. (www.85degeast.com)

March 24: Y Combinator Deadline (Nonprofits/Civic Tech Startups Welcome)

The famous tech incubator Y Combinator is now seeking applications from nonprofits and civic tech startups for their summer accelerator program.  They are looking specifically for organizations addressing issues around News, Democracy, and the Future of Work.  Join a community that includes the ACLU and Airbnb.

Applications are rolling - March 24 at 8 pm is the deadline.

Info: https://blog.ycombinator.com/rfs-news-jobs-and-democracy/

Apply: http://www.ycombinator.com/apply/

Request for Startups: News, Jobs, and Democracy

If you’re working on a startup or non-profit that addresses any of the challenges discussed below, we’d love to see you apply.

News: We’re facing two major issues with news. The first is fake news. The business model for online media rewards the people who get the greatest number of page views, clicks and likes. That results in a system that prizes virality over truth. There are economic incentives for people to post whatever is the most shareable, and now it’s so easy to spin up a fake news site that even teenagers in Eastern Europe are making a living doing it. Building tools for fact-checking and helping people decipher fact from fiction will become increasingly important to keep the electorate informed.

Second is the issue of protecting the freedom of the press. We need an unbiased, independent press to hold people in power accountable. Press also has the responsibility to use its voice and influence to protect those without money and power. We’re looking to fund tools that can help protect and defend journalists and their sources, or new revenue tools that can bolster and sustain independent media organizations.

Future of Work: Jobs will look very different 25 years from now. We’ve already seen a massive shift toward automation, and the pace of technology’s impact on work isn’t slowing down. A study by the World Economic Forum estimates that in the next five years, 5 million jobs in 15 economies will be lost. We’re interested in what comes next. People seek full-time jobs for many reasons, including money, healthcare, and a sense of purpose. We’d love to see solutions that address each of these factors (or any others) in anticipation of a changing job market.

Improving Democracy: There are thousands of ways technology can be applied to improve democracy. For democracy to function effectively, more of us need to be engaged and empowered. We’d like to see startups and non-profits who are using technology to make it easier and more appealing to get involved in the political process, and for that involvement to make an impact. We want technology that makes it easy to understand how new laws and programs impact you and your city’s budget, programs that teach young people and people from underrepresented groups how to run for office, and communication tools that make it easier for citizens to be heard by their representatives. In Summer 2016 we donated to vote.org whose mission is to increase voter registration, and we think there’s more space for organizations solving voting problems too. We’d like to see tools that address problems in the voting process, such as voter suppression and gerrymandering, to name a couple of examples. Tech may be able to make a direct impact by measuring how people’s votes have been diluted, showing how representatives are less responsive to their constituents and empowering citizens to do something about it.

We review applications on a rolling basis. Apply here now.

Summer 2017 Deep-Dive Masters, Ashoka SFS Internship Program

Apply for the first round by December 16th

[Position Description attached]

The Opportunity

Ashoka Social Financial Services (SFS) believes that markets can be a powerful tool to improve the

quality and character of people’s lives. For almost a decade, Ashoka SFS has searched for and

identified leading social entrepreneurs with systems-changing new ideas that use the market to create

social impact. A sub-set of these social entrepreneurs is showing us something new: we can achieve

greater impact by shifting the market itself to align financial success with social impact. These

innovations change what it takes to win, and have the potential to shape large-scale patterns of

market activity to benefit everyone.

The Ashoka SFS team has embarked on a collaborative effort to understand and share with others

what we believe is a new way of thinking about and designing how our markets work.

In Summer 2016, we launched the inaugural Ashoka SFS Summer Associate internship program and

welcomed the first cohort of Deep-Dive Associates. With this team of 6 outstanding Associates, we

investigated over 180 Ashoka Fellows to identify innovations that are changing the architecture of our

markets. This work resulted in case studies that dive deep into 18 market-based innovations to show

how they each create social impact in different areas of need – such as education, efficient energy

markets, affordable housing, and financial inclusion. We are expanding this rigorous program to

strengthen and maximize our team-of-teams at Ashoka SFS and reach higher levels of impact.

We are currently looking for creative and forward-thinking leaders to join our team as Deep-Dive

Masters and help us co-lead the next class of Deep-Dive Associates for 10 weeks in Summer 2017

(June 12 – August 18).

Unite For Sight’s Global Impact Corps volunteer abroad program is available year-round, and it's not too late to participate this winter, spring, or next summer! We encourage you to apply as soon as possible in order to secure your preferred program dates and location. Many program dates and locations will become filled to maximum capacity.

Watch a 5-minute video that features past Unite For Sight Global Impact Fellows who share their stories.

Unite For Sight’s Global Impact Fellows are students and professionals who are interested in public health, international development, medicine, or social entrepreneurship. Fellows support, assist, and learn from Unite For Sight's talented local partner doctors who have provided care to more than 2.2 million patients living in poverty during the past decade, including 95,000 sight-restoring surgeries. The local doctors are social entrepreneurs who are addressing complex public health issues, and Fellows gain a comprehensive understanding about the complexities and realities of delivering quality healthcare in resource-poor settings.

Unite For Sight is the only organization in the world that:

o    is a healthcare delivery organization that also offers immersive global health opportunities for students and professionals;

o    directly teaches the importance of supporting and assisting local professionals in their own social ventures to eliminate disparities in their communities and countries;

o    develops comprehensive training materials in cultural competency, ethics, and global health best practices to prepare its Fellows for a high-impact and immersive experience.

Complete details and the online enrollment instructions can be seen here.

Please feel free to let us know if you have any questions. We look forward to the opportunity to work with you during the upcoming months!
